Brioche, marble taro bread, iced sea salt coffee & dozens of other fresh treats have made their way to Brand Boulevard in Glendale, California.

Taiwanese chain 85°C Bakery Café is the latest addition to the street that is gradually becoming a prominent food destination in Southern California.

85°C’s doors officially opened on Friday, March 10 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by local officials and store managers. A line of eager customers started forming over an hour beforehand; throughout the day, over 2,000 individuals were served. In the span of the weekend, more than 6,000 customers visited the new location.

Entering 85°C is a very hands-on experience. You start by taking a cafeteria tray, set of plastic tongs and weave around the aisles to determine which baked goods (all made in-house) catch your eye. Despite the lines, which go by quickly and efficiently, the choices as well as the unbeatable prices for the high-quality and freshness of them are why this Taiwanese bakery has made its global mark.

To keep things moving, there is a separate line for beverages, such as coffee (the iced sea salt drink is a classic and must-have), teas, and boba. For those wondering how the bakery got its name: 85°C is supposedly the best temperature for coffee.

“Everyone knows we are famous for our marble taro and brioche, but besides that, we offer hundreds of other products, such as over 50 types of bread and specialized cakes,” Jeffrey Chang, general manager of 85°C in Glendale, said. “We are a Taiwanese bakery but we have a lot of different cultures represented in the products, such as European and Japanese.”

Glendale marks 85°C Bakery Cafe’s 27th store in the United States. A location in the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles is slated to open sometime this spring. The popular Taiwanese chain has over 900 locations worldwide.
